How do I dial mobiles vs landlines in Brazil

Brazil’s country code is +55. From abroad, dial your exit code → 55 → the two-digit area code (DDD) → the local number. Landlines have 8-digit subscribers; mobiles have 9-digit subscribers and always start with 9 nationwide. Example: landline +55 21 3333-3333 (Rio), mobile +55 11 9XXXX-XXXX (São Paulo).

From inside Brazil you must choose a long-distance carrier using a CSP (Carrier Selection Code): dial 0 + CSP + DDD + number for inter-state calls, and 00 + CSP + country code + area code + number for international calls. Common CSPs include 15 (Vivo/Telefônica), 21 (Claro/Embratel), 41 (TIM); some regions still show 31 (Oi).

Mobiles vs landlines: Both use the same area codes. The mobile indicator is the leading 9 in the subscriber part (after the area code). Brazil completed the nationwide “9th digit” rollout in 2016–2017, so format mobiles as +55 {area} 9XXXX-XXXX. Because number portability has existed since 2008, prefixes don’t reliably indicate the current carrier—just dial exactly as written.

Primary emergency numbers in Brazil:

  • Police (Polícia Militar): 190.
  • Ambulance (SAMU): 192.
  • Firefighters (Corpo de Bombeiros): 193.

Also useful

  • Federal Highway Police (accidents on federal roads): 191.
  • Civil Defense (Defesa Civil): 199.
  • Municipal Guard (local issues, where available): 153.
  • Violence against women (Ligue 180): 180.
  • Human rights violations (Disque 100): 100.
  • Emotional support / suicide prevention (CVV): 188.

Note: On many mobile networks in Brazil, dialing 112 or 911 routes you to local emergency services (often to 190), but you should use the national numbers above whenever possible.

Dialing tip: Converting a Brazilian number to international? Remove any CSP and leading 0—just use +55 {DDD} {number}. For mobiles, ensure the 9 is present: (0 15) 11 9XXXX-XXXX → +55 11 9XXXX-XXXX
