How do I dial mobiles vs landlines in Nigeria

Nigeria uses country code +234. For calls inside Nigeria, the national trunk prefix is 0 (you’ll see numbers written like 0xx… for landlines and 0xxx… for mobiles). When calling from abroad, you do not dial the leading 0—you dial +234 followed by the rest of the number. This “drop the 0 internationally” rule is explicitly stated in Nigeria’s numbering information published via the NCC/ITU.

A key recent change: Nigeria’s regulator (NCC) updated the fixed-line numbering format so that many landline numbers effectively gained a “20” in front of the old geographic codes (e.g., old Lagos 01… → new Lagos 0201… domestically; internationally +234 201…). The ITU publication of NCC’s update shows examples such as Lagos: 1201, Ibadan: 2202, Abuja: 9209, and similarly for other cities (e.g., Port Harcourt: 842084, Kano: 642064). Mobile numbers remain 10 digits nationally and typically begin with 070/080/081/090/091 (followed by 8 digits), and you dial them internationally as +234 plus the number without the leading 0 (e.g., 0803 123 4567+234 803 123 4567).

What are the emergency numbers in Nigeria

112 is the national emergency number (covers police, ambulance, fire, road safety, civil defence, etc.). In Lagos you’ll also commonly see 767 / 112 for emergency response, and the Federal Road Safety Corps lists 122 as an emergency toll-free line.

What are the city and area codes in Nigeria

Dialing tip: If your users still have a landline written in the older style (e.g., Lagos 01…), it may now appear as 0201… domestically and +234 201… internationally.

Which mobile prefixes do mobile operators use in Nigeria

Nigeria launched mobile number portability in 2013, so prefixes indicate the original allocation, not always the current network. Still, these prefixes are widely used as a practical guide.
