How do I dial mobiles vs landlines in India
India’s country calling code is +91. In practice, dialing depends on whether you’re calling a 10-digit mobile or a fixed landline that uses an STD (area) code. The safest mental model is: international callers use +91, while domestic callers often use a leading 0 when they need to “jump” to another area or reach a landline from a mobile network. India’s official formatting guidance commonly references 00 as the international access code (for calls out of India) and 0 as the national trunk prefix, followed by an area code (2–4 digits) and a landline subscriber number (6–8 digits)—with the area code + subscriber totaling 10 digits.
Calling an Indian mobile number
Indian mobile numbers are 10 digits and typically start with 6, 7, 8, or 9. From outside India, you dial +91 and then the full 10-digit mobile number (no leading 0):
- Example format: +91 9XXXXXXXXX
Inside India, most of the time you can dial the 10 digits directly from a mobile. From some fixed lines, you may also be able to dial the 10 digits directly; if a call doesn’t go through from a landline, a common fallback is to prefix the mobile number with 0 (because 0 is used as a national trunk prefix in India’s dialing scheme).
One important “real-world” note for your site: India has mobile number portability (MNP), so you can’t reliably identify the current operator from the starting digits anymore. Prefixes are still useful to recognize “this looks like an India mobile,” but they’re not a guarantee of the carrier for billing/routing.
Calling an Indian landline (fixed line)
Indian landlines use STD (area) codes that are usually 2–4 digits long, followed by a 6–8 digit subscriber number (together they form a 10-digit national significant number). When you call a landline from outside India, the rule is simple: dial +91, then the STD code without the leading 0, then the subscriber number.
- Example (Delhi landline): +91 11 XXXXXXXX
- Example (Mumbai landline): +91 22 XXXXXXXX
When you call a landline within India, what you dial depends on where you’re calling from:
- Landline → landline in the same STD area: you can often dial just the subscriber number (variable-length/local dialing rules may apply).
- Landline → landline in a different STD area: dial 0 + STD code + subscriber number.
- Mobile → any landline in India: dial 0 + STD code + subscriber number (this is the “always works” pattern to publish).
If you want to give users quick, familiar examples of STD codes, these are widely used metro codes: 11 (Delhi), 22 (Mumbai), 33 (Kolkata), 44 (Chennai), 40 (Hyderabad), 80 (Bengaluru).
What are the emergency numbers in India
India’s national emergency number is 112. Other widely used emergency numbers include 100 (Police), 101 (Fire), and 102 (Ambulance). Travel and public-information sources in India also commonly list 108 for disaster management/ambulance services in many states and 1363 as a tourist helpline.
